August Week #3

It is time for the weeks reads again, and this time we have some good stuff. First, we have some novelizations of one of the most popular of the newer TV drama's out there. These are excellent thriller stories in their own right, but if you are familiar with the program then the characters will be fleshed out even more for you in the books than they have the time or ability to do onscreen.

Our second selection is some of Philippa Gregory's fantastically accurate, and wonderfully concieved historical novels of the life and times of famous royalty and other historically important people of the pre-edwardian periods. Her stories follow the lives of women, so they have been at times marketed as 'romances' but they are nothing but incredibly good historical fiction.

Next we have what could really only be described as the works of a literary genius. These works take and make the greatest authors and figures in and of our greatest literary works of the past and turns them into characters in stories about conspiracies, and secrets that have been points of controversy concerning their lives. Fascinating and fun studies of the authors, their contemporaries, and the secrets of their lives and deaths.

Our fourth selection this week is a post-apocalyptic trilogy about a world that is hit by fantastically strong earthquakes, tidal waves, volcanic activity, and climate changes brought on by our moon's being hit by a planetoid-value asteroidal body, and slowed to a much closer orbit to the earth. The first book follows a teenage girl as she and what is left of her family try survive in a world literally gone mad. The second book follows the life of a teenage boy from New York City on his tremendously dangerous and incredibly lucky survival trek into the better for survival interior of the country. The third book follows the meeting of our two protagonists and their story as they come together to begin a new world.

Our last offering this week is some horror stories from an author who knows how to make the worst fears and creepiest moments of our daily lives into full-on scare-a-minute horror stories. These works of fright and fear are wonderfully frightening looks at those parts of our lives that bother us for no visible reason, that reach out to us instinctively on a visceral level and make us shudder. They look at them and then develop them into the horrors we couldn't quite percieve. Great stuff!
