There is a TV show on the USA cable channel in the United States that is a well-written and classy ex-spy-turned-private-troubleshooter story. (It's true, look up the reviews, as unbelievable as it is in today's television marketplace) One the only shows I watch besides Dr.Who on BBS, it novelizes very well indeed as you can see for your self in these stories based on the show.

A mainstream thriller writer who wrote numerous best-sellers in the sixties and seventies, Arthur Hailey is probably best known to todays readers as the author of Aiport, the book made into a hit movie of the same name. His writing is however, superb, and his other stories are excellent reads with fast, tense action and great characterizations.

Here we have some crime\suspense stories in which the protagonist is a great detective, and is also a witch. He is a wicca who has, and knows of the magical effects possible for both good and evil, and some of his cases involve evil, and evil magic most foul. A fascinating blend of paranormal and noir detective story telling, these are definitely worthy reads.

The Swords of Raemllyn is a more-or-less typical swords-'n-sorcery series, with characters thrown up against steep odds and battling theirs way to victory in a long, painful haul that requires determination, skill, and grit. What is probably not typical about these books is the wonderful world-building and excellent characterizations. These books did not get the attention they deserved.

Ok! Some excellent reads here, I found the Don Brown stuff quick reads that somehow retained a complex plot even with the fast-paced storys.
ReplyDeleteThe 'Burn Notice' stories were true to the characters in the show, but we can finally see into their thinking as to motivations and also learn more backstory to how they ended up where they are.
Arthur Hailey is a master thriller writer, not much else to say about that, must reads!
M R Sellars writes a great series, and while he has disclaimers in his books about the liberties he takes for the storyline with the wicca faith, he really does seem to know a lot about it, which helps the storyline's authenticity and feel.
Robert E Vardeman's little fantasy series is just the right combination of excellent writing and escapism to produce a truly delightful series of books.
