September Week #4

Welcome to a new week! And to make it one with some great reading, we have something for everyone. First, we have some stories about changlelings, men who can turn into animals at will or when threatened. The first is a lycathrope, which is familiar to everyone, man to wolf. The other three however, are different, one can change into a large bird of prey, the next a black panther, and the last, a classic American cougar. Well written with as much story and action involving this ability, in a criminal, a cop, a disturbed and angry man and a man of some privelage, there is also a romantic interest. Fun stuff.

Our second selection is a rather great fantasy series about heirs to empire, chosen by the gods, genetic sports, with all-white eyes and great strength and charisma. Some realy epic fantasy here, fun and involving. The empires clashing, the usurpers bedeviling, it is all here, and in the end, empire must grow or become stagnant. Here is a story and series you will not be able to put down, with some great concepts and imagery.

Our next selection is a fun little series, which is marketed as romance, but is some fun fiction, written with wit, humor, and great characterizations, it tells the story of a goth girl who tours with a Goth Faire filled with witches, gypsies, and other people with a alternative lifestyle. She finds and must contend with a vampire boyfriend, a mad wizard, trickster witches, a whole battlefield of ghost vikings, and a goodly number of other less than normal events. Fun and funny, a little sarcastic at times, and always a bit wry, this series is a fun read.

Our fourth selection is a pair of novels about an ex-IRA assassin, and his desire to kill the people who gave him the orders to kill, who turned him into what he has become, and then to abandon him for political expedience. As he works down through his list, a detective of police with a familial association with the killer he doesn't even suspect, and a kind of sympathy he doesn't expect, will hunt him to try and stop him. Filled with suspense and roller-coaster action, these are thrillers of the first water!

Our last selection today is a series of novelizations of one of the best new shows on BBC television, the Torchwood series. Inspired and spun off the Dr. Who series, this show and books, tell the story of an agency who's sole purpose is to protect the world from the space-time rift that is found in Cardiff. Monsters, aliens, and strange influences come through the rift and threaten the very fabric of human history, and the destruction of the earth itself. Unkillable hero Captain Jack Harkness and his team fight for all mankind, on the front lines of a war that few are aware of.
