July Week #3

Here it is Monday, and we have a new crop of books to look over. First is a series by an ex-grunt that co-writes some of the best ground-pounder scifi fiction out there. It is the continuing adventures of a FIST (Fleet Initial Strike Team ) marines unit as it invades other worlds and fights battles for a twenty-fifth century world federation. Hoo-rah!

Our second selection is some of the skin-crawlinist, creepy, and downright scary stuff being written by any contemporary writer. In his Pine Deep Trilogy you find an interesting dicotomy of modern mythos all scrambled together to form an omlet of horror that can't be beat, hopefully, neither can the citizens of Pine Deep. In the Joe Ledger Saga, you have a team who battles, well, monsters. Fun and involving reading in both series, and some truly scary moments.

Next we have some military scifi about one Major Ariane Kedros, the most kick-@ss soldier that the terrans have ever produced, the only problem is she can't be used openly, or acknowledged in any way. It seems as if everyone else in the galaxy is miffed at her for destroying an entire planet! Go figure. These books are both exciting and fast-paced, with just the right amount of humanity in the characters who are finding themselves in inhuman situations. Very good.

Our fourth selection this week is some psycho-thrillers that inject you into the mind of a serial killer. This was done so well, and humanized an unhuman mind so effectively that it was created as a series on Showtime. These really are hauntingly approchable looks into the psychotic mind. Frightening and fascinating, they are fantastic reads.

Our final selection is some crime thrillers from the mother-daughter writing team using the name P. J. Tracy. These gals can write up suspense like there is no tommorrow, you will not be able to put the book down to get that whistling tea pot. Stubbed toes and burnt fingers are a real possibility with these little gems. Excellent character development and some very tight scene construction make for great reads.
